EITI IN THE WORLD- LATEST NEWS (based on the EITI and PWYP newslatters) - 2003
  • Achivements of Ghana

    • Workshop was held at Cape Coast, Ghana for all Stakeholders in May 2003.

    • At the June 2003 Ghana became the country of choice to lead EITI implementation

    • A meeting was called between DFID and Ghana Government to chart a road map for implementation.

    • A major recommendation was the establishment of a secretariat as a focal point for the coordination activities in respect of the EITI. This has been undertaken by the Ministry of Mines with Logistic and Technical support from DFID.

    • A second decision was the setting up of an Interim Management Committee (IMC) with membership from all major stakeholders. This has been accomplished with representatives from:

- Civil society represented by Integrated Social development Center (ISODEC)

- A major mining community represented by Tarkwa in the Western Region of Ghana.

- The National House of Chiefs

- Chamber of Mines

- Minerals Commission

- The Administrator of Stool lands

- Ministry of Finance

- Internal Revenue Service

- Mines Inspectorate (Mines Department)

- Customs, Excise and Preventive Service (CEPS)

- Ministry of Mines

  • Immediate task of IMC was to subject recommended Template from DFID to a closer scrutiny. This has been concluded.

  • Modified Templates have been referred to Chamber of Mines by the IMC. This was to make the Chamber Contribute profitably to the issues being proposed by the IMC.

  • The selection of an independent Aggregator was to be done after the templates has been presented to the Stakeholders and the reporting Entities for their contributions.

  • This workshop is the next stage of the processes where the templates have been fully discussed and the EITI Officially launch. The Ministry together with the DFID and the Ghana Chamber of Mines are now striving the ensure the smooth implementation of the initiative.

  • In September 2003 the government released the half year results in the Mineral Industry
